First of all, Congratulations! You got your two lines, + sign or the digital PREGNANT. If you’re like me you probably have all three?!? Now that you’re pregnant, I’m sure you have a lot going through your mind. I’m going to help you with my personal experiences and I hope to put you a little more at ease. I’m going to list a number of tips to stay healthy during the first trimester.
Time to find a Doctor
Normally once you find out you are pregnant its time to schedule a doctors appointment. They will want to see you sometime between 8-12 weeks to confirm your pregnancy. Now I wish someone had told me that with my first pregnancy because I scheduled an ultrasound at 5 weeks and to my disappointment there was nothing to see… The baby was not developed enough. A question you should ask yourself now is what kind of doctor do you want to schedule an appointment with. This all depends on personal preference but its nice to have choices. I like to see a Midwife, my birth plan was to try to go as natural as possible. I had an amazing experience and will choose to use a Midwife throughout my next pregnancies.
- Dentist Appointment is just as important- You are at a higher risk for gum disease which can affect your baby’s health. It is vital to get your regular dental checkups and cleanings.
- Prenatals- If you haven’t already, start taking your prenatal vitamins. Its beneficial for your changing body and for growing a beautiful healthy baby.
Staying Healthy during you first trimester can be trying at Times
During your first couple of months of pregnancy, your amazing body is going through so many changes. It is important to eat a diet high in fruits, veggies, protein, and fiber. That can be very difficult when dealing with nausea, food aversions, and morning sickness. My advice is to find a nutritional shake that has greens, protein, and vitamins to help you get most of your nutrients down in one shot. I personally use Shakeology by Beach Body and have used it before, during and after pregnancy. It has been a lifesaver and then the rest of the day when I’m feeling off I can eat whatever my body can handle.
You are now also eating for two, but that doesn’t mean twice the amount you usually eat. Doctors recommend that once you are pregnant you should be consuming an additional 300 calories a day. You are going to have days where you eat more, days that you can hardly keep anything down and days you can’t fathom the idea of eating anything but carbs. Listen, Mama, That’s OK! Don’t worry too much about losing or gaining weight because it usually evens out at the end.
If you haven’t already and you’re a coffee lover like me, its time to cut down on caffeine. You don’t have to cut it out completely. Doctors recommend 200 mg of caffeine a day, keep in mind that includes chocolate and tea as well.
Keep yourself Hydrated!
It is absolutely important to stay hydrated throughout your pregnancy. It has a lot of benefits to help keep you and baby healthy.
- Hydration reduces swelling
- Softens your skin, which also helps ward off itchiness due to skin stretching
- Keeps you cooler
- Prevents dehydration
Exercise Regularly
It is certainly beneficial to keep that body moving while you are pregnant. I cannot tell you how much better I felt getting through my workout routine. Some days are surely easier than others but the least you can do is walk. With my first pregnancy, I was lucky enough to be able to continue my workouts until two days before I gave birth. Benefits of exercising regularly can make such a difference for you:
- Can prevent excess weight gain
- Reduce pregnancy related problems such as back pain, swelling and constipation
- Improve sleep
- Increase energy
- Boost mood
- Prepare body for labor
- Lessen recovery time after birth
Last but not Least Kegals!
So important that you strengthen your pelvic floor to prepare you for birth:
- Promotes perineal healing
- Regain bladder control
- Boosts sexual health and Pleasure
Now who doesn’t like the sound of that. They are so easy to do as well. To practice, you can start while you are using the washroom. When you are peeing, stop-hold-release and try again… Then you can continue to practice daily, Start by squeezing for 5 seconds, 10 seconds and so on… Theres even an app to help you if needed, I use the one called EASY KEGAL.
